There is no bigger, or more exciting place to work right now than Birmingham. Following the success of the Commonwealth Games, we are on a bold transformation journey with grand ambitions for the city, our citizens and the Council.
We are looking for innovative and passionate individuals to join our legal team, who are highly motivated and want the best possible outcomes for Birmingham’s 1.2 million citizens.
Birmingham is a diverse city with a rich heritage, and we are a diverse and inclusive employer and would welcome you to join our legal department which is reflective of the Birmingham community.
As the largest Local Authority in Europe, we offer successful candidates a diverse range of quality work and an opportunity to build on existing experience, reasonable internal targets, a good work life balance with flexitime, and other usual local authority benefits including an attractive local government salary related pension. If you looking for a career within the public sector, and are tired of “overly ambitious” billing targets, too much marketing, and a poor work life balance then this could be the place for you.
Working for the legal team in Birmingham City Council, will give you the opportunity to work on a wide range of exciting projects – some of which will be of national and international significance. The quality and complexity of the work is equal to that found in larger firms in the private sector, who are often “on the other side”.
The breadth of legal work in the department is second to none. We deal with contentious areas of law including criminal prosecutions, Anti-Social Behaviour Orders as well as Employment Tribunal claims. In addition, we have non-contentious work within our commercial, data protection, commercial property and planning team, so we really will have a role to suit your skills and expertise.
A breakdown of the legal teams is as follows:-
- Adults
- Commercial
- Civil Litigation
- Data Protection
- Employment
- Housing Management
- Homelessness
- Housing Disrepair
- Personal Injury
- Planning
- Property and Re-generation
- Criminal Litigation
The work that is allocated in the team is allocated based on workloads and therefore the most junior to the most senior members of the team will have exposure to complex cases.
For the time being it is anticipated that there will be substantial home working involved, although office space is available if desired. There will be the occasional requirement to attend the office where there is a business need.
We are happy to take candidates with demonstrable transferable skills who have the drive to make a difference to the citizens of Birmingham.
Therefore, if you are looking for a change and want to make a positive difference where the impact of your role has clear purpose on changing people’s lives on a daily basis then think of Birmingham as your employer of choice.
What our people say
Janie Berry - City Solicitor and Monitoring Officer
Legal Testimonal
I joined Birmingham City Council as a Trainee Solicitor where I had the opportunity to work in 7 different seats in the organisation. I was supported via my training principal who was an Assistant Director and there has always been a drive to develop and support you. Following qualification, I secured a job in the employment team as a Solicitor where I had my own caseload which included complex matters, transfer agreements, general advice claims etc. I received management support in developing my advocacy skills, drafting applications to the Employment Tribunal and had legal assistant support to assist me with my casework. Subsequently, I was able to progress with the team through many development opportunities and am now the Head of the Employment Team. I would thoroughly recommend a career in Birmingham, the breadth and the quality of the work is something I look forward to each day as I know that no two days will be the same. I also thoroughly enjoy having the knowledge that the steps I take achieve outcomes for the residents of Birmingham, in terms of our case outcomes, value for money and instigating change. A career in local government really is the whole package; it is varied, complex and very rewarding.
I came to work for BCC from an agency on a short term assignment working for the disrepair team. My previous employer had been intervened by the law society and I had 6 months left to complete my training contract to become a qualified solicitor. This was a very challenging period as I didn’t know whether I could complete my training and qualify. The support and guidance I received from the AD at the time was unbelievable and I will always be eternally grateful to him and BCC. He agreed for me to complete my training and work experience enabling me to qualify as a solicitor 6 months later. I was successful in securing a permanent position within the council within the year and have been working here for the past 23 years. Working inhouse has a variety of work and experience is gained in areas that cannot be gained in the private sector. I am now Head of Service and can say that BCC does offer opportunities to those who wish to develop themselves professionally. I would highly recommend working for BCC as it offers flexible working and working from home. The fact that many people stay for over 20 years is a testament to the benefits of working for BCC.
