Foreword – Jeannie McMillan – Director, Housing

As the principle provider of genuinely affordable, quality homes across many North East Communities, we provide thousands of households with the security and stability they need to get on in life.

The substantial investment we commit, year on year, to our existing homes, neighbourhoods and new build programmes, helps create a diverse housing supply, tailored to meet a range of household needs.

To successfully deliver all of this, directly and through our supply chain partners, we support the employment of thousands of people across the region, including our own 550 strong workforce of proud, professional and passionate people.

With such reach, influence and impact, we make a real and lasting contribution to community wealth, demonstrated through the way we employ, develop and support people, the way we invest our financial capacity, and prioritise economic, social and environmental benefits.

This all builds to cement Bernicia as an anchor institution, rooted in and committed to the North East region.

Vision

Bernicia is dynamic, with traditional values - we deliver what we say we will do in line with our values and in the ‘Bernicia Way’. Our edge is the talent, experience and knowledge of the individuals in our teams, we recognise the skills of each of our colleagues and work to our strengths. Our Housing teams are supported by authentic role models in our Heads of Service who lead with integrity at all times. Each of our service areas in Housing, including Retirement Living, work in collaboration to ensure that we are consistently delivering for our communities and stakeholders.

Case Study Section

Bernicia Case Study : Dan Brown, Housing Officer

Housing Officer Dan Brown is preparing for promotion to Team Leader.

It’s the latest step in his impressive career progression since joining Bernicia eight years ago as an office services advisor.

“From day one Bernicia said ‘we are bringing you into the organisation to bring out your potential, we want you to push yourself and we will back you all the way,’” said Dan.

Bernicia supported Dan to work through his professional development plan, paying for him to complete two apprenticeships in Business Administration and Level 4 Property Management.

He grasped opportunities to work in different parts of the housing service, gaining experience and knowledge of how all parts of the business fit together to deliver services to tenants.

“The role of a Housing Officer is all about helping people,” said Dan.

“It’s not just about what you see on the surface, it’s about making the right judgement call that’s right for and needed by the person.

“My time working in income management required helping people through early intervention to prevent arrears, identifying where there may be underlying issues impacting on their ability to pay rent. But make no mistake, there is a job to be done and rent has to be paid.

“I feel really proud of my work because I know I’m helping people - especially vulnerable people - to manage their tenancy and keep a roof over their head. Having a good, long term home is even more important during all the instability in the world at the moment.”

While working hard to achieve this, Dan successfully studied for a Foundation Degree in Housing and Communities, supported by Bernicia with day release.

His hard work and commitment saw him recognised as a Bernicia ‘Rising Star’, as well as New College Durham Student of the Year, topped off by his promotion to a newly created Team Leader role where he will continue his work to ensure people live safely in their homes.

“I couldn’t believe it, you hear about people saddled with debt at university and I got to learn on the job with a degree specifically tailored to what I do, paid for by my employer,” said Dan.

“A lot of my friends have degrees which have no relevance to what they do. I’m so pleased with the career path I decided to go down.”
