Welcome Block 1

About Us

We are the Department for Business and Trade (DBT)

We have a clear mission - to grow the economy.

Our role is to help businesses invest, grow and export to create jobs and opportunities right across the country. We do this in three ways:

  1. We help to build a strong, competitive business environment, where consumers are protected, and companies rewarded for treating their employees properly.
  2.  We open up international markets and ensure resilient supply chains. This can be through free trade agreements, trade facilitation and multilateral agreements.
  3. We work in partnership with businesses every day, providing advance, finance and deal making support to those looking to start up, invest, export and grow.

Our people are based across the UK and around the world. We connect business and government, which is reflected in the skills and experience of our people.

Welcome Block 2

What we do

We unite business expertise and world-class trade negotiators under the same vision of making the UK the best place to start and grow a business - driving growth, increasing jobs, and raising wages and living standards. We amplify engagement between business and government and strengthen our offer to international investors, as well as unlocking exports and negotiating access to new markets through trade deals.

Our range of expertise enables us to provide a joined-up offer of support to UK businesses operating domestically and overseas. Delivery overseas is managed though our International Network in over 100 countries led by our nine HM Trade Commissioners. We also collaborate closely with colleagues and partners across central and local government, Devolved Administrations, Parliament, business and civil society. At home, DBT is prioritising the levelling up agenda by focusing our growth in our Places for Growth locations of: Darlington, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Belfast, Birmingham and Salford, as well as London.

For you, it means a job that will help you grow as part of an organization that operates as one team drawing on wide-ranging expertise from business and finance to policy and economics. You will get an international perspective on business as you focus on connecting the best of British commercial thinking with the needs of businesses around the globe.

Find out more about DBT and what we do on our GOV.uk site or follow us on Twitter and LinkedIn.
